clutter

There are messes around me. In the barn, the cheepers are malting (that would be moulting!:) ). It would seem to me to be a bad idea to shed feathers in the dead of winter, but there are feathers everywhere. And of course, since they are now staying exclusively in the barn or coop, their own messes are much more contained and, therefore, evident. I see a huge spring cleaning there awaiting us.

Too, there are messes in the farmhouse. Every item purchased for Snowdrop's future visits came well packaged and so we have styrofoam and massive sheets of cardboard everywhere, waiting for some decision from higher up as to how best to dispose of them.

All this makes me uneasy. I like order. Ed will tell you that I can't live with disorder. I am restless until all the clutter is gone.

Much of this day is reminiscent of yesterday, only without the sunshine. Appointments, errands and Snowdrop care.

Normally, I'd jump from breakfast...

...to contemplating the beauty of the land around me, but honestly, after yesterday's brilliantly sun-drenched landscape, things appear rather somber today, so I'll take you straight to the cheepers, because I know some of you have missed them. Here they are in their rather scrappy mode:

And from there, I'll sail over to little Snowdrop who never ever disappoints!

She is dressed today for visitors that will come later, but of course, she radiates from within, even when she is sleeping. (Oh! She matches my own shirt!)

At the day's end, I leave her in the arms of her mom, give a hearty wave and head home.

At the farmette, the clouds clear and the sun sets in lovely pink tones over the layer of snow.

I note, with great satisfaction, that little Snowdrop's corner in the front room of the farmhouse is ready for her .

Yes, there is clutter in the mudroom, but there's order in the front room and pink light on the snow outside. Life is so balanced! And beautiful.

  1. It's such a privilege that you share with us these first days weeks years with Snowdrop. She's so precious. As grandmothers we have an advantage of sorts... we know how fast time flies by. I so enjoy reading your enjoyment. It's a delight I wait for each evening. xo

    1. Yes, there's a lot of "passage of time" feelings we process... Thanks, Irene B!

  2. I'm sure raising your eldest daughter from a newborn to an accomplished adult and mother has been a magical ride, now watching your beautiful granddaughter grow up — nurturing and encouraging her — is going to be a joyful adventure for you both. Seeing you bursting with happiness as you share your days with us is a wonderful gift to us. Life is good.

  3. "the cheepers are 'malting'..." I had to stop for a minute and think about that... I realize it was just a slip of the fingers and should have been "moulting" (or even "molting") but there is such a thing as "malting" and it involves the making of an alcoholic drink. I figured you haven't got the cheepers out there with a secret still going on in the barn...

Anyway, I love that you get to be there each day in these early days of Snow's life. And probably for ALL of the days of her life, knowing you. I was just in amazon looking at books and dvds on the Scottish Isles and remembered that you may be going back there this summer... I'd say that's a good choice, given the unrest in other places on the other side of the ocean! xxxxx

    1. Oh my! I should quit posting late at night! I made the correction but preserved the error for humor's sake!
As for travel -- yes, there is that trip planned, but there are others and of course, we learn that there are no safe corners anymore. Still, probably the most dangerous thing I do in my life is get behind the wheel of a car.

  4. Your brilliant weather has found its way southeast to us, and it put me in the mood to take down the second tree finally - quite late this year! It's a "winter tree" with white lights and, you know, silver pinecones & things, and that's my excuse for keeping it up as long as I like. But suddenly one day I surprise myself with the urge to put it all away.

Today I made "portobellos bourguignon" from the Smitten Kitchen cookbook. Didn't I hear about that cookbook from you? Our daughter Erin gave us a copy. When we go to visit the new young family, Eric always cooks for everyone. He is so generous, and a great no-recipe cook. But Papa & I both always bring yummy healthy dishes for our Mary to have later, so this time it will be the lovely fragrant wine-soaked mushrooms.

I am excited to see little C tomorrow! We have been burning up I-71, visiting every week! Your pictures of little S are so precious. It's cool to be going through almost the same experience together. Similar and also unique.

  5. Your Snowdrop corner is great... she'll love it. And in no time at all, she'll kick and grab at the mobile..., and I hope you'll share a picture of it!

  7. The pics of little Snowdrop are precious, and I love all her little outfits, but today my focus was on Ed grasping his spoon for all he's worth. That made me smile. :)
