bowling, not alone*

It’s a day for indoor work, yet again. But with breaks.

Movies, yes, of course. Winter movies. Depressing, excellent but horrible movies.

Ed, want to see another?
In a day or two…

Searching for alternatives, Ed proposes bowling. Now, some people do not like engaging in things they are not good at. They like to smell at least the possibility of success. I am one of them. And so I remain quiet.

Ed asks: How about if we just take a look.

We do.

It’s sweet. Saturday. Kids’s day.

So if these little tykes can do this, maybe you can do this?
Maybe.

I have bowled only a handful of times (bowling was an unknown in Poland) and even if there are bumper guards, you can count on my ball jumping lanes and finding a safe haven in an unguarded gutter. Still…Ed is so enthusiastic, so eager. I'm wondering if bowling is to Ed as France is to Nina.

Tomorrow. Let's bowl tomorrow.

To get through January and February (see post below), one has to, I have to, think broadly and acquiesce.

We drive through white fields in gray light. Nothing pulls me toward the outdoors now. Nothing.

Tomorrow, we bowl.

  1. By all means, go bowling. It's a key element in Wisconsin Culture - the Milwaukee area has long been the HQ of all organized US bowling.

For the full experience, you need to drink beer between frames, preferably in a place that still allows smoking, as the smell of cigarettes and cigars are also traditional elements of the bowling atmosphere. I suggest the Waun-a-Bowl in Waunakee for such pleasures.

Or, you could stay home and watch "The Big Lebowski."

  2. I second the beer-drinking advice. I find that I bowl much better (and actually speak foreign languages better; an odd connection, I know) with at least one beer in me. After about three or four, the results are mixed. Cheers!

  3. Go bowling. Forget about your score. Just have fun!

Bowling is big in Michigan too. I was in a bowling league long ago when I was in my early twenties. Although my average ranged between 200 and 210, a high score was never very important to me or my teammates. We were there to have fun. And drink beer. One night, I was in pain from an emerging wisdom tooth and self-prescribed scotch to dull the pain. By the third game my tumbler of scotch was empty, my pain a distant memory and the pins at the end of the alley a distant blur. And wouldn't you know -- every ball I threw in that third game was a strike. I bowled a perfect 300 game! My only one. Ever. While half-plastered.

So go bowling. Have fun. Have a beer. Just stay away from the scotch.

  4. I haven't been bowling in probably 20 years. I keep thinking how much fun it would be to take K. If we go, we'll certainly take the cameras (video and still)... :)

  6. Oh yes, do bowl. I second that on foreign languages and beer, too. Remember there are beer frames and you must wear an appropriate shirt. And don't take any bets from Amish bowlers.

  7. So Nina, has any post ever generated so many comments? All because of bowling? Geesh...
