cafés in the fog
Well, you can write loving tributes to outdoor café life in places that can afford it this early in the year, but today I’ll stay with a nod to those who try to make the best of a tough situation. We are not Nice, we are not even Washington D.C., we’re Madison, Wisconsin and although it is no longer shockingly cold outside, it is also not pleasurably warm.
So I applaud you, you season-busters! Amidst the dirty melting snow mounds, there on a foggy March day, you sit and each lunch. Impressive.

So far this week I've noticed a surge in outdoor eating as well. Granted where I live it's generally warmer than Madison, but after lots of snow and biting cold weather, people are eager to sit around on terraces, benches, outdoor cafes in the sun - and the past couple of days have definitely been lovely and spring-like.
ReplyDeleteI also live in Madison, and a few weeks ago while ice-skating after school with my daughters, I got thirsty and ate new-fallen snow. It was DELICIOUS. Better than I remember as a kid. Today I couldn't be paid enough to eat a bite of the black leftovers.
ReplyDeleteI love that view of the Union. This "thawing" time of year means so much more in Wisconsin than it does here in New York, and I remember jumping at any opportunity to end my hibernation, even if it was eating lunch outdoors in the fog!
