still winter

It is what it is. Dull, dreary, cold. Even colder tonight. And snowing. Lightly, to irritate the snow lovers among us, because it's not enough to look nice or feel good under a pair of skis.

On the upside, we had a stunning (if mostly cloudy) sunrise!

And it happened at 6:38. That is almost an hour later than at the end of December, when I recall watching it break the horizon at 7:29. So much more daylight now, even if today it is rather a gloomy kind of daylight.

You wont notice streaks of sunlight streaming onto our breakfast table.

And it isn't the kind of day I would consider taking little Snowdrop out for another little stroll. We played today in her home, monkeying around. Well, maybe I was the goofy one.  She just gave me that quintessential Snowdrop stare that asks -- why is the world so confusing and what is my grandmother doing?

Oh, Snowdrop!

On balance, it was such a fine day! I cannot neglect a quick mention of driving home in the snow. Lily has her winter tires on and though Ed scoffs at this wheel change from one season to the next, I have to say, I felt like I was really gripping the road. Psychological, I'm sure, but so what? Is there a difference between happiness based on delusion and happiness based on reality?

  1. I'm not so sure the wheels gripping is psychological. DH says he's definitely noticed a difference with our new tires. Apparently the rubber is softer at colder temps and the treads are deeper, so more grip.

Love the gently muddled confusion on Snowdrop's face in that one pic. :)

    1. But is it a question of better tires -- rather than the switch from summer to winter then back to summer then back to... ?

  2. Here, winter tires are a huge thing. Which is strange for a person coming from Wisconsin where it should probably be a bigger thing than it is.

    1. Do you know if they use chains or just some fancy winter tire? You are right about Wisconsin -- no one I know changes to winter tires come November. Except the dude who sold me Lily.

  3. Monkeying around... so what Snowdrop wears is telling you what she wants :^) She's definitely working on figuring things out... just wait until she can talk!

    1. We all look forward to that moment when a child can talk and express herself... then, a new kind of chaos begins!

  4. Answer to your last question: YES!! The delusional one is riding for a fall. But you were only joking, right? And if you're referring only to tires, then sure, maybe.

Snowdrop's other grandmother is so fortunate to have your wonderful photos every day, to help her feel close to her little one.

I take short videos with my iPhone6 and send them to my mother's occupational therapist. That was her idea, great for Mom's mental health. Her two therapists are angels.

I told you, Nina, that my 87 year old mother fell in January and fractured her "tailbone". After a brief hospitalization, she moved to a wonderful rehab center, and she is making great progress and lots of friends! She is much happier there than she was at home alone. I love that she's there, safe, well fed, and well cared for. She feels like an "A" student, and she feels like the popular girl in high school, she tells me, laughing at herself. But really, she is so UP when we talk every day (and off the pain meds). :)

    1. Will your mom be returning home soon? It seems she likes community...
I suppose many many people harbor delusions throughout their lives (you know I can give you a heavenly example of such) and are made happier by them. Isn't that okay? Just wondering... (But yes, in the post, I was just messin' around.)

    2. Medicare paid for the first 30 days, and with her own supplemental insurance, she can stay for 100 days, as long as she cooperates in working and improving. She just was allowed to bear weight this week, and use her walker again, very briefly.
Now she is playing the piano in the lobby. I tell you, she feels like quite the bright star! :)

Oh! to answer your question, she does want to go home again "and try it". There will be lots of support services. Dad always said getting old was not so bad as long as you've got money.

Hence the selling of the old red car. I do understand! and perhaps I'm ducking some hard questions about retirement. For example, we don't have the gold plated insurance that Mom has.
We take our good health and good genes too much for granted. That's my happy delusion. ^^

  5. I just heard on the news the other night that "all-weather-tires" are useless in snow. Completely useless. If you want traction, get actual snow tires. So you were right.

    1. I wonder then why people change to summer tires. What's so special about summer tires??

  6. No chains here. Summer tires? So they don't melt? Don't they say optimists are less in touch with reality than pessimists, but happier?
