tidbit
People’s relationship to Sunday is a complicated one. You hate it. You love it. You dread Monday. You dread your life. You feel like you didn’t live up to its potential.
I like not having to teach on Mondays so that Sunday begins to feel like any other day and I do not have to put much thought into what it all means.
But I liked even more Sundays in France where the village began the day with a market, tended to its afternoon hours with a nice big meal and than basically fell into dozing on and off until suppertime. I can handle that.
Today I put myself into the French mode, absent the market. (Find me a farmers market on Sunday in the States and I will personally make an appearance and shop there. Maybe not. But I would think about it.)
I fixed a biggish lunch for a smallish bunch of people. I opened a bottle of rose wine.
I cleaned up, had a strong cup of coffee to fight the post-lunch drooping eyelid problem and counted the minutes til supper.
One might argue that this is not a full day. One would be wrong.

I read your post and then visited another favorite of mine, Paris Daily Photo blog. (I guess I'm a lurker!) In addition to the fact that he is French, his image of bikes, and enthusiastic "Wrong!" reminded me of your blog and the last sentence of your post. I was inspired to come back and post a comment.
ReplyDeleteCome to Jack London Square in Oakland on Sunday, along the Oakland-Alameda estuary, for our Farmer's Market. There's a Farmer's Market nearly everyday of the week here--between Oakland and Berkeley--except on Mondays, I believe.
There are two area farmers' markets on Sunday mornings: Monona's is at Ahuska Park, next to Pier 37 Shopping Center, E. Broadway from 9-1 pm and the Northside Market is at Sherman Plaza, corner of N. Sherman and Northport Dr. from 8 - noon.
ReplyDeleteNeither is as large as the Dane County Saturday Market on the Square or the great new Westside Community Market at the DoT parking lot at Segoe Rd & Sheyboygan Avenue (www.westsidecommunitymarket.org). But now you have no excuse to sleep in on Sunday.
For all the area markets, see the 2006 Farm Fresh Atlas at: http://www.reapfoodgroup.org/atlas/farmers_markets.htm#mad

The best Farmer's Market I've ever been to was in Portland, Oregon--I wanted to move in and live there. Alas, it was on a Saturday not a Sunday.
ReplyDeleteIf you click on that PARIS DAILY PHOTO link in Janelle Renee's comment you will discover that there are over 100 city-based daily photo blogs available, and more popping up all the time (you can sign up to do one for your own city). This could become majorly diversionary.
ReplyDeleteLunch was lovely. The food was terrific and the company even better. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteAlso, looking forward to spending more time with Little S and Little C before they head back to school.
Join me some Sunday at the St Paul market, though Saturday's is bigger, I like the more leisurely pace of Sunday's market--downtown and only local produce.
ReplyDeletejanelle and sixty-five, I can vouch for the guy at PDP! LOL Thanks for the vote of confidence!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you like Eric's site, Nina, and I think your photos are just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Eric. De rien, I should say. :)
