escape

We dont always succeed, but my two friends (where the friendship dates back to when we were in law school together) do try to meet up with me for a threesome getaway once a year. Luckily for me, one comes from her home in New Mexico to Wisconsin fairly frequently anyway, and the other who lives in Florida loves revisiting this place, and so I myself dont have to travel far to do this: they come up to my home state.

Barbara is already in town and Diane arrives today, and tomorrow, we're heading out for a looooong car trip together. (All of 30 minutes!) We rented a place for half a week. We plan to shed all responsibilities and just have fun!

I'm the youngest of the threesome, though not by much. We have cycled through school, new relationships, family dramas, grandparenting, moves and more moves. We've traveled together, with our wee little ones (to England! in 1984!) and then later just us three, or with partners -- indeed, both have come to Poland with their spouses to visit me there. But the best have to be the getaways when it's just us three, somewhere away from the chores and tasks of everyday life. We know each others habits and inclinations. We know what we like. This year, we chose an Airbnb that is close to coffee shops and hiking trails. The essentials of life! We'll be going there tomorrow.

Today? Well, it's Saturday and I almost slept in, but a staff member from my mother's Rehab Center put in a 6:30 call to me and that proved to be it! No more sleep. Which is okay, because I had morning errands to run.

(A brief glance at what's at play in the garden...)

(A quick trip to the downtown market, for the asparagus, for the flowers, for the carrots!)

(And an even quicker trip to Madison Sourdough, just because it's so close by...)

Breakfast comes later, on the porch.

It's hot today. A high of 86F (30C). Like summer, only without the pestilent bugs! As I work outside (spot weeding), I take in that summer vibe that is so missed by us in the more dreadful weather days of the shoulder seasons. It's beautiful out there. Without question, it is all so very beautiful.

And then it's time to go tot he airport pick up my arriving friend, Diane.

We eat dinner on the porch and use the rest of the evening to partially catch up, saving the bulk of our stories for the days ahead, when Barbara joins us. More on what it's like to escape -- just us three! -- tomorrow.

with so much love...
