Friday, Thanksgiving week

This morning, while others dig into Thanksgiving leftovers, I must admit to sticking to my oatmeal. Morning and evening routines are tough for me to break!

After this breakfast mishmash, the men scatter to do their work and the women (we are four!) band together and set out for Clasen's Bakery -- a place we always and I mean always visit just once a year -- before the Christmas holidays. And yes, we are officially in that winter holiday season!

Snowdrop had been here a year ago and still, she is a bit dazed by the place: it's sort of extraordinary, really. Lots of glitter and sugar and chocolate (and bread too, but your eyes these days turn to the more colorful concoctions). She doesn't necessarily want to eat any of it (and is most happy when her mommy buys her a plain old mini croissant), but she does want to take it all in.

For kids, the piece de resistance is Clasen's gingerbread house.

There are any number of customers who would have taken a picture of the four of us, but I like my timed release shots and despite the crowds,  I set one up here.

Snowdrop would really like it best if her mommy, aunt, and gaga would just hang out in the house with her...

... but others want their turn and besides, we have some small shopping to do! (Chocolate covered gingerbread... mmm!)

"But it's so fun in in here!"

We have other errands and, too, we stop at the Hubbard Avenue Diner for lunch. And then my two daughters retreat to their work, which leaves just Snowdrop and me -- the two people of the group who have absolutely no work to do. (Well, folding endless washed napkins and putting away dishes and pots and all other holiday paraphernalia may be work, but I admit, it's all rather trivial. My cooking marathon is behind me. My attentions return to the here and now.)

We play. She rests. Oh, does she need that rest!

Afterwards? Take a look:

Dinner. Take out Laotian. Just what the doctor ordered!

Crab rangoon!

"I like having you here!"

The evening draws to an end. Almost. Snowdrop needs to retire, but we can all go to her home and watch a movie while she sleeps...

Yes, a lot to be thankful for.

Thanksgiving Day

An early start. Must let pecan rolls rise before baking. Caramelize the carrots for the egg frittata. Gray skies outside, warm smells inside. I nudge Ed: we've cornered an opossum and a mouse -- both need to be set free... elsewhere.

Rolls come out of the oven, the first young couple, traveling from Chicago, arrives.

farmette life-2.jpg

Soon after -- Snowdrop and her parents are here. The little girl, excited to see her aunt, brings her gifts of all her favorite stuffies.

farmette life-5.jpg

We eat informally, taking this moment to just sit back.

farmette life-10.jpg

But afterwards, the day rolls forward at top speed. Lunch foods must be prepped first: squash soup with herbed goat cheese dumplings. Aprons on. You too, Snowdrop? Okay!

farmette life-16.jpg

"How can I help?"

farmette life-18.jpg

Shouldn't we give the chickens some Thanksgiving treats?

farmette life-20.jpg

Back inside. Mommy reads.

farmette life-24.jpg

What's that banging noise? Gaga is pounding, then rolling out the pie crust. Snowdrop helps.

farmette life-29.jpg

Hard work. Snowdrop takes a break.

farmette life-33.jpg

My daughter and I continue. She whips up the sage stuffing. Done!

farmette life-35.jpg

"Is it time for Thanksgiving dinner yet?"

farmette life-37.jpg

No no. Snowdrop. Lunch first!

farmette life-44.jpg

"Daddy, will you fix my slipper?"

farmette life-46.jpg

My younger daughter studies the dinner menu.
Ambitious! Do you have a schedule? -- she asks.
Sort of. In my head. More or less.
Let's get organized!
She creates a timeline.

farmette life-49.jpg

After that it's just a question of who does what, when. Slowly the dishes fall into place: spicy roasted carrots and roasted beets for pre-dinner munching.

farmette life-54.jpg

The turkey, of course. Herbed, then splayed, so that it cooks evenly. Mushroom gravy. Stuffing. Oh -- that's done already! Cheesy hassleback potato gratin. Pumpkin cornbread. Brussel sprouts with roasted hazelnuts. Corn with chipotles. But really, we must get those desserts out of the way. The pumpkin cheesecake with whisky pecan sauce is done. Let's finish the honey and thyme apple pie.

"It feels like I've been chopping herbs for a very long time."

Thanksgiving dinner.

... And for a spirited game of "who can jump higher."

A beautiful day. It comes, it ends, but the warm glow lasts forever.

I hope you had a very wonderful day as well. With love.

Wednesday, Thanksgiving week

Everything that happens on Thanksgiving is set by how you approach the day before it.

I try to focus on this small truth as I get up at dawn to open the coop for the cheepers. I have a strong tug to bed afterwards: go back under cover, warm up, it'll get done, it'll get done.

But I know better. I need to fire the engines!

I start with farmhouse cleaning.

Followed by breakfast.

farmette life-2.jpg

And then I have a quick errand to do at the store and I hear that Snowdrop is anxious to come shopping too, so we set out: the girl, her mom and me. Four photos that I think illustrate why the girl loves a shopping adventure:

(orange slices!)

farmette life-7.jpg

(shrimp!!)

farmette life-10.jpg

gaga, did you drop your (short) shopping list??

farmette life-11.jpg

I love it all!

farmette life-13.jpg

The three of us come back to the farmhouse. It's a wet day, but Snowdrop wants a quick run outside.

farmette life-21.jpg

Indoors now. Lunch first. Sushi! My, but does Snowdrop love sushi!

 farmette life-33.jpg

She plays, her mom keeps an eye on things, I bake.

farmette life-27.jpg

Pumpkin cheesecake with a pecan crust.

farmette life-1-2.jpg

Then the nutty cinnamon rolls for breakfast.

farmette life-2-2.jpg

And the cornbread -- I have to do that tonight as well!

Done! Snowdrop and her mom go home. I may or may not get to the apple pie crust tonight. But I'm doing well! I'm not completely behind and overwhelmed! I am in control!

The air is damp, the lights twinkle.

What a beautiful week it is!
